A permission from a share holder won't be that strong. I would suggest you try to get contact or wait until you can get in touch to the original artist before anything else.

Best Regards,

I'm having problems contacting the original artist. Would permission from a direct relative who's a share holder be sufficient?

Yes you do say this all the time - however it needs to be re-stated. The artist now has the power. The CC licence empowers the artist, and because you can directly contact the artist, you are encouraged to do so!

No lawyer can get in the way. If the artists says yes - score! it also provides them with a much needed commodity - feedback!

Just my opinion...

Kind of a tricky one. The CC licenses aren't really intended for source code. I feel like I say this all the time, but when in doubt: ask the original creator. It's their work at the end of the day. So, if they don't mind, they can waive any aspect of the license for you.

I'd like to use a CC-SA -licensed widget (code + graphics) in a closed source web application.

It looks to me like this is allowed, as long as we don't distribute said application (under a non-share-alike-compatible license). Am I right?

A potential sticking point here is what the CC means by 'distribution'. Would only selling/giving away the source count, or is merely putting it up on our web server enough?

Thank you,
Isak
